Individualized Education Program, commonly referred to as an IEP, is mandated by the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). IDEA requires public schools to develop an IEP for every student with a disability who is found to meet the federal and state requirements for special education. The IEP must be designed to provide the child with FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education). The IEP team develops the IEP annually and changes can be made to the IEP if needed throughout the school year. The IEP contains the annual goals for your child and states the services that your child will receive from the school that will meet their unique needs.
